Garden Pictures - 2016 - Flowers -

Pictures of my garden plants and flowers:
Perennials and Annuals

Most of my perennial plants came from my Mom & Dad's garden.
I have been carrying them around from house to house for years, but they are part of who I am.

This summer ( 2016 ) the weather has been hot and humid.
Things like Lavender, Yucca, Sunflowers, Russia Sage, Lambs Ears and Irises are just beautiful.
However, Hostas, Ornamental Grasses and Ferns are struggling with the heat, but there's always next year.

Annual and Perennial flowers

Spring Tulips, Hemlock and Cedar Trees.

When I planted these two trees they were less than 2 feet high. Now they are over 10.

Once upon the time when we owned some property, I dug out some ferns and evergreens before the property was sold.
Even though the ground was frozen, I pulled them out by the roots and so far I only lost 1 tree out of 4.
Ferns are still ok - they even came with some woodland plants. I think one of them is a Yellow Trout Lily ( Erythronium americanum ). Bright yellow lily flowers. The leaves are speckled green.

my mom s garden in a box

When my Mom sends me flowers - I just dig a large hole and plant everything in that spot.

When spring arrives - It's always a surprise.

It's like having a garden sent to me in a box.

Sometimes I even get hitchikers like - a couple slugs and a worm. :)
I kept the worm.

moms yellow primroses

These primroses where beautiful this year. Real healthy and lushes. My Mom send me other primroses, but these were the only ones that survived the move.

This year my Mom sent me a whole bunch more of primroses and I can hardly wait until they bloom.

the freshness of spring

I love everything about spring.
The garden just comes to life. Everything is in such a hurry to make their presence known.

the year of the iris

The year of the Iris.
At first I thought - I worked hard the last 6 years making sure I didn't lose too many of my irises, so this is just the results of my hard work.

Well - I think the fact that we're having one hot, dry summer this year - helped.

yellow iris - repeat bloomer

This Iris is a repeat bloomer. It blooms twice during the year.
I also bought a pink one, but it didn't bloom this year. Don't know if it died or decided not to bloom - just because.

variegated leaf iris

Variegated Leaf Iris.
This one was a gift from my oldest daughter. The flowers are not spectacular, but the leaves are very striking in the garden.

Jacques and Jean s Poppies

Jacques and Jean's Poppies
They were all suppose to be pink, but a white one showed up this year as well.

I also had red poppies, but I moved them and they don't like to be moved. So, this year I started new red seedlings. Hopefully next year I'll have red poppies too.

Jacques and Jean s Poppies

A couple years ago - I think - my Mom sent me a whole bag of lilies and they were beautiful. Large stems full of beautiful lilies. This is one of them.

This year I had some, but you can tell the plants were stressed. Next year will be the year of the lilies. I am working on amending the soil around them already.

lavender pictures

Lavender
Another plant that is benefiting from the hot weather. When you walk by the garden you can't miss the lavender fragrance.

yucca bloom garden pictures

Yucca Bloom pictures.
Beautiful tall Spikes of white flowers.
I also have gold leaf yuccas, but they didn't bloom.

japanese variegated willow

This a pretty bush.
The new growth tips are dark pink in early spring.
Easy to propogate.
Just cut a piece of the soft wood and stick it in the ground. Done!
I bought this as a bush, but I am training it into a tree.
Dappled Japanese Variegated Willow.

california poppies

I love this plant.
It's an annual.
It seeds itself everywhere, but it's easily pulled out.
Beneficial insects loves it and I love the bright yellow colour in the garden.

birdhouse for rent
Birdhouse for Rent.
This spring I saw a song sparrow go in this little birdhouse.
Then he came out and he sang and sang for a very long time.
Then after a long while a lady bird - I guess - came and they both went in to check out the new free premisses.

They both decided to setup house and I was thrilled.
Went to check my new bird friend neighbours and I think they've already upgraded to a bigger house. The nerve!
So, now I have a birdhouse for rent. No more freebies!

fuchsia - the teacher of patience
I called this Fuchsia "my patience teacher".
I was gifted this Fuchsia and I didn't know what to do with it.
Someone was thinking of me and the least that I could do is to keep it alive.

That was not easy!
It's a Fuchsia and likes partial shade - the only place that I have - is the deck and it faces south.

Here's the patience part:
I had to water it every morning and at night too. Fertilize once a week and clean all of the dead blooms everyday.

My Fuchsia is still alive and I'm hoping to winter my plant and train to grow as a small Fuchsia tree.

Many times I thought of just throwing it on the compost pile, but my Fuchsia has taught me patience. I even talk to my Fuchsia and tell her how beautiful she is.
I thank my Fuchsia for teaching me patience and making my world just a bit more colorful.
Happy Gardening! :)
