Flowers - Perennial & Annual - Backyard Garden Pictures-

Pictures of my Annual & Perennial Backyard Flower Garden with Pictures - 2019

Last time I documented my gardening journey, was 2016.
It's time to start again and I hope you enjoy it.

This year I concentrated mostly of fixing things around the yard that needed to be done like; repairing the fence.
As for the spring bulbs and plants near the fence, they didn't do very well.
I needed a fence more, because the rabbits were eating everything in the spring to the ground level.
Next year, it will be a good year for that flowerbed. :)

New stuff for this year:
This year I bought one Green Emerald Arbovitae to replace the one that died and two Blue Spruce Trees. I love Blue Spruce in the wintertime when they are covered in snow.

Surprises this year:
Lupins and Irises rebloomed this year. This is November and they are still blooming.

Disappointments this year:
It has to be my Lilies.
When my Mom sent me a bag of lily bulbs, they had large blooms and were prolific bloomers. Now, I think I have to do something. I don't want to dig them up, because I don't want to do more damage than good. So this year I added compost and "Bone Meal" will see what happens next year. I might have to dig them up and take my chances.

As for the Flower Harvest:
I did get lots of "self sowers" this years.
I mostly cut Cosmos, Lavender, Poppies, Snapdragons and Hydrangeas.
See this Rabbit?" he also likes Snapdragons. He doesn't seem to like "Nicotiana.

Backyard Home Flower Garden with Pictures

This year spring was ahead of my plans. I wanted to get my fence finished before all my spring bulbs emerged, but we were both racing the weather and time. However, the thing about gardening " there's always next year". :)

my favourite season - spring

Spring - my Favourite Season:

I love everything about Spring.
The colours, the fragrance, the birds' chatter and even having the Kritters eating my hard work that I did the year before.
"Not!" Not them. They can stay home! :)
You thought I forgot how frustating it has been keeping up with the Squirrels and the Rabbits. :)
When the Forsythia and the Primroses starts to bloom, my whole backyard comes to life and I say "Welcome Spring!"

rabbits and squirrels eating my tulips

Tulips - Welcoming Spring

This year the Squirrels and the Rabbits did a number on my tulips.
I would go outside early in the morning to check my garden and I would find at least a half dozen of tulips either eaten or just cut and left on the flowerbed. The stems were too short to put the tulips in water.
So, I looked at my beautiful tulips lying there and I said "the least you could do is leave me a bit of a stem" by the time I went in the house to cook supper, some Critter obliged. :(
The squirrels can't eat my bulbs, because I have all of my spring bulbs covered with chicken wire, but they do chew the tulip stems and leaves it lying there. The Rabbits will eat the whole tulip flower. Crocuses; Rabbits will eat everything to the ground.

Self-sown Flowers - 2019

This year I was "blessed" with a lot of self-sown flowers, because they are so prolific, I always have an abundance of cut flowers to bring in the house. Sometimes I also cut some and leave it outside where I sit.
I had Cosmos, Poppies, Snapdragons, Nicotiana, Marigolds, Calendula and California Poppies. All free flowers.

Nicotiana growing in pot

Flowers growing wherever they want.

I was thinking about a planted a pot with flowers by the garden shed, but I never got to it, but something decide I should have something there anyway. It's just growing in gravel. Nicotiana, Sunflowers, Snapdragons, Milkweed and Black-eyed Susans were planted by something. :)
Nicotiana was really pretty in the pot and it look good until the first snowfall.
If I planted anything like this in gravel, it would probably die.

autumn joy seedum

Sedums

I love the texture and colour of Sedums.
They are easy to propagate perennial plants that loves the sun, but it will also tolerate some shade.
I have Sedum in the flowerbeds, boots and watering can.
They were so pretty and easy to maintain and it give me a chance to re-purpose something that ordinarily would be going to the dump.

sunflower seedling

The only Sunflower

<--- see the sad looking sunflower seeding? There's a story behind that.
It goes like this:
Once upon the time I picked my best sunflowers, labelled them and put them up on the top shelf until I went in the house.
I forgot about my seeds and when I remembered, all I had left were crumbs.
In the spring I sowed my crumbs and this is all that grew, 1 sunflower.
I think these seeds came from my Mom.
I did that with crocuses one year. No crocuses the next morning either. :)

casa blanca lilies in full bloom

Casa Blanca Lily

I like this white Oriental lily, because it's fragrant and it's a late bloomer. (July)
The only problem I have with this lily is that I can only find it for Sale in early spring.
It's too early to plant outside, because my garden is still frozen.
So, I plant them in pots and wait for spring to arrive at my end of the world.
This year I left a pot by our back door. What a beautiful and fragrant surprise. I thought they were all going to rot or be eaten by the squirrels. So, I covered my lily bulbs with chicken wire.
